Dick DeVos has been at the forefront of many activities affecting the lives of citizens in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan for decades now. One example of his activism took place when a team of developers communicated plans to build a mega sports arena in the downtown area of Grand Rapids.
DeVos was familiar with the destruction a similar construction caused the city of Detroit year before and did not want his own city to suffer a similar fate. He immediately began a campaign against the arena that led to the formation of the Grand Action Group. The group successfully thwarted the arena plans and went on to complete a number of notable constructions of their own.
Dick and his wife Betsy both benefit from being heirs to large family fortunes. The couple has not been shy about using the sizable influence they possess to affect the political climate in Grand Rapids as well as the state of Michigan as a whole.
Betsy has been a frontline fighter for charter school expansion. While Dick played an instrumental role in a 2012 law that transformed the state into one that favored right to work policies. Previously, Michigan was a state that leaned heavily in the direction of organized labor.
Dick DeVos also started the West Michigan Aviation Academy. The charter school is a non-profit that began in office space located at the Gerald Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids. The school began its operations with 80 students.
The Aviation Academy now provides an education to more than 600 students who live across seven counties in the state of Michigan. The school also has its own campus now.
The school is in line with the rhetoric and philosophies communicated by Betsy for years. It is also in line with the concepts she wishes to push throughout the nation in her new position as the Secretary of Education.
The Great Lakes Education Project is a school advocacy group founded by Dick and Betsy DeVos. The organization includes a political action committee. The Education Project and other groups associated with Betsy DeVos fought against a proposal in Detroit to create a commission that would oversee the openings of schools in the city.
Betsy DeVos expressed her belief recently that the problems with the educational system in America cannot be solved by bigger government. She says the key is listening to parents and dealing with education on a local level.

There is no question about it, Trump Administration Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is one interesting individual. When you meet her in person, she can definitely come across as warm and inviting, but ask her political enemies and they will tell you that underneath that gentle veneer lies a political fighter who is every bit as dogged and determined as her boss President Trump. Betsy DeVos has a lot of passions in life, and she is willing to go to great lengths to defend them. One of these ideals would be in the realm of fighting for school choice. Indeed, Secretary DeVos has her own method of running the nation’s schools, and she does not deviate much, if any, from that path.
One example of this would be during reports last year of a Trump ruling that rescinded an Obama policy that allowed transgender students the ability to use the bathroom that identified with their chosen gender. DeVos was tasked with meeting with certain education leaders and alerting them to what was coming. Of course, aides indicated that Secretary DeVos had privately been against the move. However, if she showed any indication of there being a rift in the Trump Administration she definitely could have won an Oscar. Not only was she was a willing public participant in the announcement of the new policy, but she also told a committee called the Conservative Political Action Conference that the policy that was rescinded was a glaring example of “the Obama administration’s overreach.”
Of course, the one thing you need to know about Mrs. DeVos is she has fought for most her life for the inclusion of charter schools to be in the public education sphere. She realizes that everyone, not just the very wealthy, should have the right to send their kid to an environment that will offer them the best education possible. DeVos is one of the main reasons why Detroit is filled with charter schools while their public schools continue to deteriorate.
Of course, another interesting thing about Betsy DeVos – and one of the hallmarks of her political chutzpah – would be the fact she is not afraid to team up with individuals that she normally would vehemently disagree with on other issues. One instance of this would be when she teamed up with Miami-based rapper Pitbull to tour one of the charter schools he started in his hometown. You see, Betsy DeVos believes that giving public schools a little bit of competition will not only be good for charter schools, but also good for public and private schools simply because it will force all of the institutions to do better.

The march of technology can be an amazing thing. Historians estimate that it took thousands of years for the first humans to develop rudimentary agriculture. Now, our level of technology changes roughly every ten years. The rapid pace at which human ingenuity is advancing gives us both a reason to be hopeful and perhaps also a reason to be fearful.
One person who doesn’t have the fearful outlook is entrepreneur and futurist Jason Hope. He is one of the people helping to drive the march of technology into the future. As we know, every great advancement requires money to fund it, and that’s where the entrepreneurial spirit comes into the picture. Many people see entrepreneurs as a driving force in the economy, and that picture is accurate. However, they can also be drivers of technological and social change. Such is the case with Jason Hope. See more of Jason Hope on Medium.
One of the ways in which Hope attempts to give back to the world that has helped him succeed is by donating to organizations that pursue new medical research. Most notably, he donated $500,000 to the SENS Research Foundation. The SENS Research Foundation is an ambitious research organization that works not just to fight disease, but to reverse its effects. Their work is currently focused on anti-aging medicine and regenerative medicine.
This is an amazing concept if you really give it some thought. Imagine a world in which we could regenerate damaged tissue or diseased cells? Instead of trying to constantly patch and fix the body’s existing systems, we could actually restore them to a younger and fitter state? Sure, it seems like science fiction, but if it works out, it would be worth every penny that Jason Hope has invested and a whole lot more. Such technology would completely rewrite medical science for the better.
Of course, an experienced professional like Jason Hope wouldn’t be laying his money down for these people if they were not making good progress toward their admittedly ambitious goals. They have been examining the buildup of glycation end products in the body, and looking at ways to reduce the buildup of these harmful substances. The work of the SENS Foundation has identified these metabolic waste substances as one of the main culprits of age-induced health disorders.
Certainly, these developments are exciting. With enough good people like Mr. Hope investing in their work, we can all hope that our lives might be extended through this groundbreaking research.
Dick DeVos loves his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and he has been a part of many different efforts to improve his city. As the son of the founder of Amway, and the former CEO of the company, he has leveraged, both, his knowledge and income to make important changes to Grand Rapids. Close to three decades ago there was a plan that was gaining steam to build a sports and convention arena in the city that would be used for multiple purposes. While many others began to support the idea, he knew better.
The sports and convention arena was going to be built just north of the downtown area of Grand Rapids, and this alerted him to what he needed to do. Instead of just voicing his opinion about the negative aspects of building such an arena, he got on the phone ans started making phone calls. During his lobbying effort, he managed to help with the formation of Grand Action, which is a group comprised of business leaders in Michigan that have worked to make the city of Grand Rapids a better place. Over time, they have done so by being a large part of the construction of buildings like the DeVos Performance Hall Michigan State University’s medical school, and many others.
The reason Dick DeVos was so adamantly opposed to the idea of the sports and convention arena was because he had witnessed something similar in Detroit way back in the 1970s. What took place then was the building of the Pontiac Silverdome and Palace of Auburn Hills, and its construction ended up being a huge mistake when the Detroit Pistons and Lions decided to leave the city. Dick DeVos could have just waited and let the city make its own mistakes, but like a good businessman and caretaker of Grand Rapids, he decided to get involved before a lot of time and money was wasted.
This wasn’t Dick DeVos’s first rodeo, because he was also the key person who was responsible for bringing Southwest Airlines into the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Instead of just wooing Southwest to Grand Rapids, he ensured that the airline company would offer non-stop flights of the city. Dick DeVos is also the co-founder of the West Michigan Aviation Academy, which is nonprofit charter school. The school started out with 80 students but is now bursting at the seams with 600 students who are interested in the aviation industry.
